Kennedy Wins On Turner’s Home Run

Michelle Turner’s two-out home run in the top of the seventh inning lifted Kennedy to a 3-2 victory over Dana Hills in the second round of the Cypress softball tournament Saturday at Arnold Park.

Turner also pitched two innings of relief to earn the victory for the Fighting Irish (2-0), ranked fifth in The Times’ Orange County preseason poll.

Turner (2-0) threw a two-hit shutout in Kennedy’s 2-0 victory over Huntington Beach in an earlier first-round game.

In the Brea Olinda softball tournament:

Brea Olinda 5, Burroughs 1--Catcher Tiala Tagaloa hit two home runs and drove in all of Brea’s runs in a first-round game.

In nonleague softball:

Foothill 6-9, Clovis 1-0--Courtney Fossatti (1-0) and Elizabeth Bendig (1-0) picked up the victories for the host Knights (2-0). First baseman Kristen Mann was two for three with a homer and two runs batted in in the second game for Foothill.

Mater Dei 1-3, West Hills Chaminade 0-0--Tia Bollinger pitched a no-hitter and a two-hitter, striking out 20 in the two games, for the Monarchs (2-0).

Sheila McCorkle’s game-winning suicide squeeze was the difference in the first game. Jessica Young, Sharee Gillespie and Jessica Gonzalez had RBIs in the second game.

In second-round games at the Loara baseball tournament:

Aliso Niguel 7, Canyon 1-- Chris Fielder hit a three-run home run and Jeremy Burchette added a two-run shot, his second of the year, for the visiting Wolverines (2-0).

San Clemente 5, La Mirada 0--Miles Farquhar pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts for San Clemente (2-0). Billy Pinney had two hits, an RBI and scored twice for the Tritons.

Santa Margarita 4, Loara 3--Matt Rocheleau and Matt Woolley each had two hits for Santa Margarita (2-0), and Mike Foley doubled in the sixth to drive in two runs.

University 5, Cypress 3--Jay Nichols had three hits, three RBIs and scored a run for visiting University (2-0).

At the North Orange County baseball tournament:

Huntington Beach 11, Sunny Hills 1 (5, mercy)--Freshman Jason Jordan struck out four and gave up one hit for the Oilers (2-0) in the second-round game.

La Quinta 4, Lakewood Mayfair 3 (8 innings)--Jeff Moscoso’s bunt scored Jose Castaneda with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth for La Quinta (2-0) in a second-round game. Freshman starter Ian Kennedy had seven strikeouts and gave up one run.

In the Capistrano Valley Relays girls’ swimming meet:

Irvine wins--The Vaqueros placed first in five of seven events to capture their fourth consecutive title. Junior Lesley Christiansen helped the 300 freestyle relay (2:40.51) and 200 butterfly relay (1:56.19) teams to victory, then swam 25.6 as anchor of the winning 200 medley relay (1:45.29) unit.

At the Villa Park Relays:

Villa Park wins--Villa Park won its fourth consecutive title.

At the Sonora Relays boys’ swimming meet:

Spartans win--Villa Park won for the seventh consecutive year.

At the Earl Engman Relays track and field meet:

Diablos set meet record--The Mission Viejo girls shuttle hurdles team set a meet record in the Division I bracket of the 68-year old event.

The Diablo girls broke the record of 1 minute 7.2 seconds set in 1995 by Long Beach Wilson (1:06.9).

Palos Verdes Peninsula set a Division I girls’ record in the distance medley (12:38.2), breaking Dana Hills’ 1996 mark of 12:59.5.
