Penguin Home Streak Ended by Canadiens

Jeff Hackett stopped 24 shots for his second shutout of the season as the Montreal Canadiens prevailed, 3-0, on Wednesday night at Pittsburgh, ending the Penguins’ home unbeaten streak at eight games.

The Penguins hadn’t been shut out in 119 games since Dec. 22, 1998, when they lost to the Kings.

Montreal has won four of five.

The Canadiens and Penguins each have 68 points in the race for Eastern Conference playoff berths.

The Penguins finished the game without their three leading scorers. Jaromir Jagr is already sidelinedafter surgery for the removal of a blood clot from his left leg. Pittsburgh also lost Robert Lang after he was cut by a high stick in the second period and Alexei Kovalev after he was elbowed.

Trevor Linden, Brian Savage and Patrick Poulin scored for Pittsburgh.

Buffalo 2, Boston 1--Stu Barnes scored 1:54 into overtime at Buffalo, N.Y., as the Sabres ended a three-game winless streak.

Jason Woolley also scored for the Sabres, who snapped an 0-2-1 streak and won for only the second time in seven games (2-4-1).

The Bruins have lost five straight and are 0-5-1 in their last six games.

Carolina 4, Chicago 1--Bates Battaglia scored three third-period goals at Raleigh, N.C., as the Panthers won their third in a row.

The Hurricanes matched their season-high winning streak and reached the .500 mark for the first time since Jan. 9.

Philadelphia 3, Tampa Bay 2--Eric Desjardins scored a power-play goal with 71 seconds left in overtime at Tampa, Fla., as the Flyers handed the Lightning its fifth consecutive loss.

Eric Lindros and John LeClair scored second-period goals to help the Flyers move within six points of Atlantic Division-leading New Jersey.

Mark Recchi, the NHL’s assist leader with 55, set up all three Flyer goals.

Dallas 3, Vancouver 3--Alexander Mogilny’s rebound goal with 9:41 left in regulation capped a two-goal comeback and gave the Canucks a tie at Dallas.

Mogilny scored his 19th goal, tucking a loose puck past Dallas backup goalie Manny Fernandez.

Detroit 1, San Jose 1--Owen Nolan scored his 40th goal for San Jose and Brendan Shanahan recorded his 35th as the Sharks and Red Wings battled to a tie at San Jose.

Dallas Star goaltender Ed Belfour will meet with counselors before the team decides whether to suspend him for a scuffle early Wednesday in Dallas with a hotel security guard after a female companion left him, complaining to security that she was afraid. Belfour was charged with assault and resisting arrest after the scuffle at an upscale hotel about 1 a.m. He was released after posting $500 bond, said a spokesman for the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. Witnesses said he appeared intoxicated. Belfour had the guard in a headlock when officers arrived and released him only after he was sprayed with Mace, police said. . . . The Phoenix Coyotes traded veteran right wing Rick Tocchet, 35, to the Philadelphia Flyers for right wing Mikael Renberg, 27. Tocchet originally was drafted by the Flyers in 1983. . . . Claude Lapointe, a potential free agent facing a possible trade, signed a three-year extension with the New York Islanders. Financial terms were not disclosed.
