Barons Sweep El Toro to Open Softball Season

Fountain Valley pitcher Natalie King won both games as the Barons began their season by sweeping El Toro, 5-2 and 5-1, in a nonleague softball doubleheader Friday at Fountain Valley High.

Fountain Valley (2-0), ranked No. 1 in The Times’ Orange County preseason poll, got an offensive spark from Tiffani Miller, who had two runs batted in in each game. Jenny Doezie had four hits, including two doubles in the second game, in the doubleheader.

El Toro is 0-3.

In the Brea Olinda tournament semifinals:

Esperanza 1, Brea 0 (8, tiebreaker)--Winning pitcher Kristen Dedman, who struck out 16 and gave up only one hit, scored the winning run on Sheena Cochran’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth. Esperanza advanced to the final to play Manhattan Beach Mira Costa.

Brea Olinda is 2-2.

In the Cypress tournament semifinals:

Kennedy 3, Downey Warren 2 (8, tiebreaker)--Winning pitcher Michelle Turner scored from third on Brooke Porter’s single to left for Kennedy in the eighth. The Fighting Irish (3-0) trailed, 2-0, going into the bottom of the seventh but loaded the bases and scored twice with one out to advance to today’s final.

In the semifinals of the Fullerton tournament:

Sonora 2, Troy 1--Winning pitcher Carrie Wisen hit a two-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh to score two runs and win it for host Sonora.

Wisen struck out six and gave up only an unearned run in the top of the seventh for Sonora (4-0). Lindsay Knoff struck out eight for Troy (3-1).

In nonleague games:

Northwood 3, Tustin 0--Freshman Allison Lewis pitched a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts and had two hits and two runs to help visiting Northwood (1-0) win its first softball game.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

El Modena 14, Orange Lutheran 4--Jason Topor remained undefeated, winning in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for El Modena (5-0).

In nonleague boys’ track and field:

La Habra 61, Whittier Christian 52--Reggie Kemp won the 120 hurdles (16.45 seconds), 330 hurdles (42.9) and anchored the winning 440 relay (47.91) and mile relay (3 minutes 49 seconds) for host La Habra (1-1).

At the San Diego Tournament of Champions boys’ volleyball event:

Newport Harbor advances--Newport Harbor’s Billy Clayton had 28 kills in a 15-12, 13-15, 15-11 victory over La Costa Canyon in pool play at La Costa Canyon High. The Sailors won three matches to advance to today’s championship bracket.

At the Orange County All-Star wrestling meet:

Bacerra wins twice--Three wrestlers showed up for the 189-pound division, so Alex Bacerra of Santa Ana wrestled twice and won both matches. He defeated Jeremy Ellis of Loara, 6-4, in the first match, then defeated El Modena’s Brady Fink in the last match, 17-8.
