Gyuris and Taylor Advance to Alaska

Seniors Aron Gyuris of Thousand Oaks High and senior Travis Taylor of Crescenta Valley qualified for the Junior Championships West meet in two events at the Southern California Swimming Invitational last weekend at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Gyuris, swimming for Conejo Simi Aquatics, timed 21.54 seconds in the preliminaries and 21.65 in the final in the boys’ 50-yard freestyle, surpassing the qualifying standard of 21.69.

Gyuris was sixth in the 200 butterfly in 1:53.68 and clocked 1:53.07 in preliminaries, beating the qualifying standard of 1:54.89.

Taylor, swimming unattached, was ninth in the boys’ 500 freestyle in 4:34.40, bettering the Junior Championships qualifying time of 4:39.59. He placed 11th in the 1,000 freestyle in 9:35.33, surpassing the qualifying time of 9:39.29.

Phillip Denby of Conejo Simi Aquatics was seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.22. He qualified for Junior Championships with a time of 59.43 in a preliminary race.

Senior Steve Chiaro of Chaminade and Combined Competitive Aquatics Team was eighth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:12.41 but surpassed the qualifying time of 2:09.79 at 2:09.41 in the preliminaries.

Amy Jones of Cleveland and Canyons Aquatics placed seventh in the girls’ 100 freestyle in 52.13 seconds, beating the qualifying time of 52.89.

Alexis Sheridan of Crescenta Valley placed ninth in the girls’ 1,650 free in a qualifying time of 17:07.35, and Kara Denby of Conejo Simi Aquatics was 12th in the 200 individual medley final in 2:09.13. The Junior Championships qualifying time is 2:09.49.

The Junior Championships West meet is March 21-25 in Anchorage, Alaska.

MOTORSPORTS

* Ventura Raceway opens its season tonight with a program featuring Ventura Racing Assn. sprint cars and street stocks, International Motor Contest Assn. modifieds and California Dwarf Cars.

Gates will open at 5 p.m. with racing scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

According to General Manager Cliff Morgan, Craig Germanetti of Carpinteria will defend his street stock title, and defending pony stock champion Mark Fullerton of Santa Paula is expected to make his modified debut.

VOLLEYBALL
