Guenther, Davis, Saad-Anthony All-City

Gregg Guenther of Taft High, Anthony Davis of Cleveland and Justin Saad-Anthony of El Camino Real were selected Wednesday to the 10-player, All-City basketball team.

Tommy Johnson of Crenshaw was named the most valuable player.

Second team All-City selections include Midwin Francis of Granada Hills and Steve Smith of Taft.

* Oaks Christian in Westlake Village is close to announcing its boys’ basketball coach.

Gary Abraham, a former coach at Channel Islands and Moorpark College, has emerged as a top candidate.

COLLEGE

* Mindy DeGroot, a former assistant athletic director at Texas A&M-Corpus; Christi, has been hired as assistant athletic director in charge of development at Cal State Northridge.

DeGroot, who will start March 27, replaces Michael Rehm, who resigned last June to become assistant athletic director at San Jose State.

A 1991 graduate of Oklahoma, DeGroot worked for two years as a marketing coordinator at Wyoming and was an administrative intern at Idaho.

FOOTBALL

* Jeff Cortez, an assistant coach at Crespi the last four years, is expected to replace Steve Hagerty as coach at Paraclete.

The school has scheduled an official announcement for Friday.

SOFTBALL

* Junior Sarah Farnworth of Cal State Northridge has been selected pitcher of the week by the Big West Conference.

Farnworth (6-8) had two complete-game victories over New Mexico State, giving up eight hits.

TENNIS

* Stephen Amritraj’s Kids Teaching Kids Tennis Clinic is scheduled for 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the Warner Center Tennis Club in Woodland Hills.

Instruction will be provided by Amritraj, a Crespi High sophomore ranked No. 17 in the boys’ 16 Division in Southern California by the U.S. Tennis Assn., and other junior players.

* Jamal Anderson, Curtis Marsh and Isaiah Mustafa, former Moorpark College football players who are playing professionally, are expected to participate Monday in the Moorpark College Celebrity Golf Classic at Spanish Hills Golf and Country Club in Camarillo.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and the tournament starts at 10.

* Registration is being taken for the Van Nuys Recreation Center’s youth baseball season from 10 a.m.-noon and 1-9 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Tryouts are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday. The fee for players 5-8 is $55, for players 9-12 it is $65.
