At Winston-Salem, N.C.

* Duke vs. Kansas: Duke showed no mercy in the first round, outscoring No. 16-seeded Lamar, 38-22, in the second half of an 82-55 victory. Chris Carrawell scored only seven points but the other four starters each scored in double figures. Kenny Gregory made 11 of 12 shots in Kansas’ overtime victory against DePaul, but he can be slowed if Duke keeps the Jayhawks from running the floor. Troubling for Kansas is that guard Jeff Boschee made only one of six three-point shots.

* Illinois vs. Florida: Illini point guard Frank Williams could be the difference. Williams, a freshman who scored 21 in a first-round victory over Penn, provides pleasant surprises with increasing frequency. Leading scorer Cory Bradford will need to provide more offense than the five points he had against Penn. Florida lacks continuity at point guard, where three players share time. Florida, a streaky team with great depth, might be poised for a run after surviving Butler’s upset bid.

At Buffalo, N.Y.

* Pepperdine vs. Oklahoma State: The Waves must play with the same intensity and focus that enabled them to destroy Indiana. The Cowboys won’t succumb as easily. Point guard Doug Gottlieb is a poised senior who can recognize defenses. Forward Desmond Mason scored 30 points in a first-round victory over Hofstra. And six of Oklahoma State’s top seven players are seniors who should not get rattled by Pepperdine’s pressure.

* Temple vs. Seton Hall: With Darius Lane, Rimas Kaukenas and Shaheen Holloway, Seton Hall has the perimeter shooters to exploit Temple’s matchup zone defense. Like Florida, the No. 10-seeded Pirates survived the first round on a spectacular last-second shot and believe they are a team of destiny. Temple, however, is simply a better team. Mark Karcher, Lynn Greer and Quincy Wadley are scorers and point guard Pepe Sanchez gets them the ball. Sanchez had 15 assists in the Owls’ first-round romp over Louisiana Lafayette and averages 3.4 steals and 5.6 rebounds.
