The Laguna Beach County Water District hopes to help sweep away water pollution by giving out 100 brooms today in celebration of World Day for Water.

Merchants along Forest and Ocean avenues will be the beneficiaries of the gifts. World Day for Water is an international celebration to bring attention to the importance of cooperation between governments and professional water associations.

“Sweeping instead of hosing down saves a lot of water,” said Jim Nestor, district general manager. “We selected businesses along the downtown streets to help set an example for water conservation and also because of their proximity to the ocean. All water that is used on the sidewalks downtown runs through storm drains and ends up in the ocean. Sweeping helps keep our ocean cleaner.”
