Foothill Girls Top Spartans in Swimming

Villa Park started off Wednesday’s Century League girls’ swimming meet strong, winning the 200 medley relay and two of four individual events.

But No. 7 Foothill kicked into gear, starting with Daylene Coberly’s victory in the 500 freestyle to win the remaining five events and the meet, 93-77.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Card was a double winner for Foothill (2-1, 1-0), posting Southern Section Division I qualifying times in the 200 individual medley (2 minutes 15.82 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.44).

Foothill freshman Gabbie Domanic also recorded qualifying times, winning the 100 butterfly (1:02.65) and 100 breaststroke (1:12.35).

In Century League boys’ swimming:

No. 2 Villa Park 106, No. 9 Foothill 64--Chris Koontz of Villa Park posted the county’s fastest time in the 100 butterfly this year, winning the event in 53.61 and teammate Jared Jones won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.20.

In nonleague golf:

No. 1 Santa Margarita 189, Sunny Hills 199--Visiting Santa Margarita (5-0), won the match, but Sunny Hills’ Irene Cho stole the show. Cho, playing with the boys because her school does not have a girls’ team, was medalist, shooting par 35 at Los Coyotes.

Cho had birdies on the par-three seventh and par-five ninth holes, outshooting her opponents from the top-ranked team in the county.

Junior Andrew Price led Santa Margarita with a one-over 36 and Mike Farrell shot a 37 for the Eagles.

No. 2 Servite 380, Los Angeles Loyola 383--Nico Bollini shot par 70 for Servite (3-0) at Wilshire Country Club and Los Coyotes.

No. 9 Brea Olinda 390, Fountain Valley 396--Clay Wright shot a three-over 74 at Mile Square and Western Hills for Brea Olinda (2-1).

No. 5 Woodbridge 386, Corona Del Mar 402--Nate Yates was medalist with a three-over 75 for Woodbridge at San Joaquin and Big Canyon.

No. 10 Los Alamitos 198, Whittier La Serna 226--Medalist Breene Murphy shot a three-under-par for the Griffins (5-1) at Cypress Golf Club.

Newport Harbor 398, No. 4 San Clemente 400--Newport Harbor knocked off its second ranked team in two days as Daniel Kush shot a par 73 to lead the Sailors (5-0).

Jake Allanach and Scott Tippett each shot an eight-over par 80 for Newport Harbor, which beat No. 7 Irvine Tuesday.

In nonleague softball:

No. 7 Laguna Hills 12, University 0 (6, mercy)--Sophomore Jackie Eliades pitched a six-inning three-hitter and also had two hits, two stolen bases and scored two runs for visiting Laguna Hills (9-3), which broke the game open with an eight-run sixth inning.
