A small plane flying from Hayward crashed Monday onto an oil pipeline, killing all aboard, police said. However, authorities were unable to immediately determine whether more than one person was in the craft.

Capt. Bob Lane said he got a call reporting a plane down about 3:15 p.m. Wreckage was found near the Taft airport, Lane said.

Debris was scattered across California 33. He said it appeared that there were two passengers and that the plane was an experimental aircraft.

A Federal Aviation Administration operations officer in Los Angeles said investigators were at the scene trying to identify the type of aircraft and interviewing three witnesses.

Lane said FAA officials told him they lost radar contact with the plane about the time of the crash.

The plane was traveling southeast. It damaged a 10-inch diameter line.

Kern County coroner’s officials were at the scene 40 miles southeast of Bakersfield.
