For Openers, Burbank Gets Past Valencia
Kristin Talamantes and Leslie Alfaro hit back-to-back run-scoring singles in a four-run fifth inning and Burbank High beat Valencia, 6-4, in a Foothill League opener Thursday at McCambridge Park in Burbank.
Emily Brower (8-2) scattered five hits and had 10 strikeouts for Burbank (11-2).
Jennifer Burrows hit a run-scoring single and Lyndsey Romero had two hits for Burbank.
Tiffany Rhoads hit a one-out double in the fourth to start the Burbank rally.
Lauren Watson had a solo home run in the fourth inning for Valencia (8-5).
Simi Valley 3, Royal 2--The Pioneers (9-3, 4-1 in league play) collected four of their six hits to score two runs in the bottom of the eighth and win a Marmonte League game at Rancho Santa Susana Park.
Simi Valley loaded the bases with three singles. With one out, Brittney Green drew a walk to tie the score, 2-2.
Jenni Shields followed with the winning hit, a single to right-center field.
Michelle Newbold of Royal (6-8, 1-4) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth on an error in the outfield by Simi Valley.
Thousand Oaks 7, Moorpark 1--Nicole Angelo pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and allowed one unearned run, and Sheridan Fowler had three hits and drove in two runs for the Lancers (8-2-1, 5-0) in a Marmonte League victory at the Thousand Oaks Community Center.
Saugus 1, Burroughs 0--Julie Watson’s third-inning single scored Nicole Monson from second base for the Centurions (9-4, 1-0) in a Foothill League game at Olive Park.
Jennifer McLarty (3-1) and Christina Gillman, who has three saves, combined on a three-hitter for Saugus.
Malia Sullivan fired a two-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk for the Indians (9-4, 0-1).
La Canada 3, Temple City 0--Jamie Hurst hit a two-out, two-run double in the fifth for the Spartans (5-5, 4-0) in a Rio Hondo League game at La Canada.
Lauren Guza had two hits for the Spartans (5-5, 4-0).
Oak Park 14, Fillmore 0--Michelle Bregar had four hits and scored three runs in a Tri-Valley League game at Valley View Park halted in the fifth inning because of the 10-run rule.
Jannel Buckley had two hits and three runs batted in for Oak Park (5-5, 1-0).
San Fernando 6, Reseda 0--Michelle Raigoza pitched a one-hitter, struck out 11 and walked two for the Tigers in a Valley Mission League game at Reseda.
Lorena Arreguin had three hits and three RBIs for San Fernando (13-3, 1-1).
Kennedy 2, Monroe 0--Kristin Cookson hit a two-run single in the third inning of a Valley Mission League game at Kennedy. Ryane Montes (7-3) pitched a five-hitter and struck out three for Kennedy.
Poly 17, Hollywood 5--Rosanne Frias had three hits, including a double, triple and two-run home run, for the Parrots (5-8, 2-0) in a Sunset Six League game at Poinsettia Park.
