Cookson Provides Punch in Triple-A

He isn’t considered one of the Dodgers’ top prospects, but outfielder Brent Cookson does reside among the leaders in the Pacific Coast League.

Cookson, a 30-year-old outfielder, is hitting .312 with 11 home runs and leads the league with 38 runs batted in for triple-A Albuquerque. A few more performances like Monday’s and he may find himself on the Dodgers’ short list.

Cookson had two home runs and seven RBIs in a 17-5 victory over Nashville. His two-run homer in the fifth broke a 2-2 tie. His three-run homer in the sixth gave the Dukes an 8-2 lead. He also had a two-run double in the eighth.

On the pitching front, Randey Dorame of Class-A Vero Beach is off to a fast start. He is 4-0 with a 2.48 earned-run average in his first five starts. Dorame, a 21-year-old left-hander, has 26 strikeouts in 29 innings. He was 14-3 at Class-A San Bernardino last season.

The Dodgers signed former Angel reliever Geoff Edsell and assigned him to double-A San Antonio, where injuries have depleted the Missions’ pitching staff. Edsell, who was in the Angel organization from 1993-99, was 1-4 with a 5.01 ERA with triple-A Edmonton last season.
