Checo’s World Tour Hits Albuquerque

Albuquerque right-hander Robinson Checo had his winning streak stopped at five last week, despite allowing only two earned runs in seven innings of the triple-A Dukes’ 3-1 loss to Calgary.

Checo, 28, is 5-1 with a 2.58 earned-run average on the season. His career has covered two continents and four countries: the Dominican Republic, Taiwan, Japan and the United States.

He was 1-4 with the Angels’ Dominican Summer League team in 1989. He was 7-11 with a 2.88 ERA for China Times in 1994. He was 15-8 with a 2.74 ERA with Hiroshima in 1995 and was 4-1 the following season. The Boston Red Sox purchased his contract that off-season.

He has bounced from the Red Sox to the Detroit Tiger organization, then was acquired by the Dodgers in April 1999. He was 2-2 with a 10.34 ERA in nine games with the Dodgers, but missed two months with a strained right groin.

First baseman Rob Gorr helped double-A San Antonio sweep Round Rock, 5-0 and 4-3, Tuesday. He had a three-run homer in a 5-0 victory in the first game. In the second game, Gorr’s two-run single in the seventh inning gave the Missions a 4-3 lead.

Gorr is hitting .278 with six home runs and has driven in 28 runs this season.

The Missions are the top base-stealing team in the Texas League. Their 90 stolen bases are 40 more than El Paso, which is second. The Missions have four players among the top six base stealers in the league, and second baseman Mike Metcalfe is leading the way with 30.
