Fullerton’s Overtime Victory Secures Division Title in Soccer

Cal State Fullerton defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 2-1, in overtime Saturday to capture the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s Pacific Division title in men’s soccer.

With the division’s best record, the Titans (14-4-1, 6-0-1) earned the right to host the four-team MPSF tournament Friday and next Sunday.

Walter Camargo scored on a penalty kick 3:04 into sudden-death overtime. With his first goal as a Titan, the UC Irvine transfer denied his old school the chance for a piece of the division title. Second-place UCI is 4-1-1 in the conference and plays at San Diego State today.

Trailing, 1-0, Fullerton tied it on David Dischner’s goal from 20 yards out at the 69-minute mark. Cal Poly had taken the lead with a goal 35 minutes into the game.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference women’s cross-country championships:

Concordia wins--With three runners in the top four and six in the top 20, the Eagles (34 points) outran second-place Azusa Pacific (49) and Cal Baptist (87) on Concordia’s 5,000-meter course. Tricia Mattson (17:49), Rachel Lafady (18:02) and Chrissy Ide (18:07) finished second, third and fourth for Concordia.

In nonconference football:

Azusa Pacific 38, Chapman 6--After snapping a three-game losing streak last week, visiting Chapman (2-6) lost in a rout. Azusa Pacific quarterback Luke Winslow completed 17 of 28 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns as the Cougars (6-3) ran up 504 yards of total offense. Panther quarterback Todd McLean was 11 of 21 for 133 yards, with receiver Bobby Calderon catching seven passes for 90 yards.

In the NCAA Division III women’s soccer West Regional semifinals:

Chapman 2, Puget Sound (Wash.) 1 (OT)--Stacie Lopez scored from 18 yards on an assist from Sara Strahs six minutes into overtime to lift the fourth-seeded Panthers to the upset of top-seeded Puget Sound. Strahs scored Chapman’s first goal five minutes into the game on an assist from Tiffany Willis.

Chapman plays second-seeded Willamette (Ore.) in the regional championship game today at 1 p.m.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Cal State Fullerton 3, UC Irvine 1--Kim Levey had 35 assists, 15 digs and 15 kills to lead the Titans past the Anteater, 10-15, 15-9, 15-8, 15-5. Jamie Ivers had a match-high 24 kills for Cal State Fullerton (8-16, 3-9). Chanda McLeod led UC Irvine (8-16, 3-9) with 18 kills and nine digs.

In nonconference men’s water polo:

UC Irvine 10, UC San Diego 2--Jeff Powers scored three goals and Dan Klatt and Andy Coffman added two each for the third-ranked Anteaters (15-5) at La Jolla. UC San Diego (17-8), ranked eighth nationally, got two goals from Justin Wylie.
