Overtime Victory a First for Iowa

Nate Kaeding kicked a 26-yard field goal in the second overtime, and Ryan Hansen intercepted a pass to give Iowa a 26-23 victory over Penn State on Saturday at State College, Pa.

Rashard Casey’s pass on the first play of Penn State’s possession was intended for tight end Tony Stewart. The ball deflected off Stewart and Hansen dove to catch the ball and end the game.

Casey had a six-yard touchdown run to give Penn State, 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten, a 23-16 lead in the first overtime. Iowa (2-8, 2-4) answered with an 11-yard touchdown run by Ladell Betts.

It was the first time either team had played an overtime game.

Ryan Primanti, who made three field goals in regulation, had a chance to win the game for Penn State on the last play of regulation, but his 56-yard field-goal attempt fell short.

The loss keeps Coach Joe Paterno two games behind Bear Bryant for major college victories. With 321 victories, Paterno won’t have a chance to pass Bryant this season because Penn State, which has two games remaining, was eliminated from bowl contention with Saturday’s loss.

No. 16 Ohio State 27, Michigan State 13--Derek Combs rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown and the Buckeyes (7-2, 4-2) shut down the Spartans (4-5, 1-5) in the second half at Columbus, Ohio.

Michael Doss raced 73 yards with a fumble return to get Ohio State back in the game after it fell behind, 13-3, in the first 13 minutes.

Michigan State actually ran more plays in Ohio State territory than its own, 40-35.

But after Michigan State failed to capitalize on several prime scoring opportunities, Ohio State’s defense turned up the pressure, forcing four turnovers and registering seven sacks.

The Buckeyes, after giving up 115 yards in the first quarter, gave up 96 in the final three.

Wisconsin 41, Minnesota 20--The Badgers ended a three-game home losing streak, their longest since 1990, as Brooks Bollinger passed for 204 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a career-high 127 yards and a score at Madison, Wis. Wisconsin (6-4, 3-4) scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Minnesota (5-5, 3-4) lost its third in a row and must beat Iowa in its final regular-season game to become bowl eligible in consecutive years for the first time since 1960-61.

Three weeks ago, Minnesota was talking Rose Bowl after holding Ohio State to 200 yards. But since then, the Gophers have given up 1,574 yards and 133 points in losses to Indiana, Northwestern and Wisconsin.

The Gophers’ Tellis Redmon rushed 30 times for 211 yards.

Illinois 42, Indiana 35--Kurt Kittner survived a quarterback duel with Antwan Randle El, scoring on a game-winning sneak with 25 seconds to play at Champaign, Ill.

Randle El ran for 209 yards and four touchdowns, and Kittner passed for 277 yards and three touchdowns. Randle El took a last swing with a 51-yard bomb that Illinois’ Walter Young batted down in the end zone as time ran out.

The Illini (5-4, 2-4) couldn’t stop Randle El, or any other Indiana runner. The Hoosiers (3-6, 2-4) rushed for 447 yards, 161 by Levron Williams.
