OCC Ends Santa Ana’s 70-Game Streak

The Orange Coast men’s soccer team built an early lead and held off Santa Ana in the second half to post a 3-2 Orange Empire Conference victory that broke the Dons’ 70-game unbeaten streak.

The host Pirates (15-3-4, 11-2-1) took a 3-0 first-half lead on goals from Geno Vitale-Sansosti in the fifth minute, Matt Moseley (21st minute) and Josh Miller (41st minute).

But Santa Ana’s Alejandro Licea scored on a penalty kick with one minute remaining in the half to make it 3-1, and Roberto Fuentes scored five minutes into the second half to draw the Dons to within one.

However, Pirate goalkeeper Hilario Arriaga, who finished with 14 saves, made several key stops to help secure the victory.

Both teams begin play in the Southern California Regional playoffs a week from today.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Cal State Fullerton 3, Columbia 0--Megan Sabo had 16 kills and 10 digs to help the Titans to a 15-10, 15-9, 15-0 sweep of visiting Columbia.

Sabo, a former Mater Dei player, has 1,000 kills in her career, a total achieved only twice previously in the history of the Cal State Fullerton program.

Jamie Ivers had 20 kills to lead the Titans (9-16). Kim Levey had 29 assists and Krista Bebernes had 11. Kathy Lavold had 16 kills to lead Columbia (16-12).

The three-game sweep is Cal State Fullerton’s first since late September, when the Titans swept UC Riverside.
