Firefighters Ready to Begin Toy Drive

The Ventura County Fire Department will join with KABC-TV and Southern California firefighters this month for the eighth annual “Spark of Love” toy drive.

“Each year, this community service campaign has involved fire departments from within Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties,” said Sandi Wells, public information officer for the Ventura County Fire Department. “They have joined forces to collect toys for the less fortunate children within our communities during the holiday season.”

In previous years, more than 900,000 toys and pieces of sporting goods equipment have been collected and distributed to children in need through Spark of Love, the only holiday toy drive spearheaded by firefighters.

All Ventura County fire stations will serve as drop-off points where people can bring a new, unwrapped toy or piece of sports equipment that will go directly to the Children and Family Service Auxiliary at the county’s Human Services Agency for distribution to children throughout the county.

Local Sav-On stores and Subway sandwich shops will also serve as collection points.

Last year, nearly 16,000 toys were collected in the county.

This year’s program will run from Nov. 21 through Dec. 26.
