Infielders Sign With Wake Forest

Infielders Ryan Hubbard and Jeff Ruziecki, teammates at Huntington Beach High and Cypress College, have signed with Wake Forest, Cypress Coach Scott Pickler said.

As freshmen, Hubbard batted .382 with 16 extra-base hits, 30 runs batted in and 14 stolen bases and Ruziecki batted .359 with 23 extra base hits and 51 RBIs.

* Saddleback College pitcher Chad Cummings and catcher Zach Dobek signed with the University of San Diego, Saddleback Coach Jack Hodges said.

Cummings, a right-hander who was 2-2 with one save and a 5.11 earned-run average last season, was a 44th-round draft pick last year by the St. Louis Cardinals but did not sign.

Dobek batted .314 with five doubles and nine RBIs in 13 games before an injury ended his season.

BASKETBALL

Jackie Lord of Brea Olinda signed a letter of intent Thursday to attend California, she said.

Lord, a guard, averaged 14.8 points, 4.1 assists and 3.5 steals last season, helping the Ladycats win the Division II state title.

* Denver East High boys’ basketball forward Ross Schraeder, who recently announced that he will attend UC Irvine, said he expects to sit out next season while he attends classes and concentrates on his studies.

‘They’ll redshirt me,” he told the Denver Post. “And that’s fine with me. They have a bunch of guards who are pretty good.”

A 6-foot-5, 180-pound swingman, Schraeder averaged 12 points a game last year.
