Jetin Excess Is Perfectly Fit

A bruised foot may have kept Jetin Excess out of the Breeders’ Cup last week, but the California-bred filly looked plenty healthy Saturday at Hollywood Park.

Remaining unbeaten in four starts for trainer Pico Perdomo, Jetin Excess tracked the pace under jockey Victor Espinoza, then drew away in the final furlong to win the $100,000 Moccasin Stakes by a little more than two lengths. The 5-2 third choice in the field of seven, she completed the seven furlongs in 1:23 3/5.

Princess Belle, the 19-10 favorite, was second, a length in front of stablemate Whoopddoo. Golden Celebration, the 5-2 second choice on the strength of a powerful maiden victory last month at Santa Anita, finished last.

“She’s a special filly,” said Perdomo, who owns the 2-year-old in partnership with Earle Malley and Don Calabria. “I worried a little bit because I missed a few days of training after she bruised her foot. This was not an easy race.

“It seems like she has another gear. Every time she runs, she surprises me. She was the only California-bred in the race and there were some well-bred fillies in here.”

Senure, who has been idle since finishing fourth in the Charlie Whittingham Handicap on May 29, is the 2-1 favorite against seven opponents in the $70,000-added Steinlen Handicap today at Hollywood Park.

Trained by Bobby Frankel for Juddmonte Farms, Senure, a 4-year-old son of Nureyev, has trained decently for his return and has shown the ability to run well fresh.

In his U.S. debut last Jan. 2, which came after he had been away for three months, Senure won going away, then nearly four months later won the Fastness Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Iridanos, who ran poorly in his U.S. debut for trainer Julio Canani in the Oak Tree Breeders’ Cup Mile last month, is the 5-2 second choice. The English-bred colt had a setback a few days before that race, so he might not have been at his best in a race won by Breeders’ Cup Mile winner War Chant. A winner of six of 15 in Europe, Iridanos could rebound this afternoon in the Steinlen, which will be run at 1 1/16 miles.

Four races before the Steinlen, Reraise, the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner, will make his first start in more than 1 1/2 years in a competitive $52,000 allowance.

Trained by Craig Dollase for a partnership, Reraise has trained well for his latest comeback and will be looking for his eighth victory in nine career starts. The gelding was last seen winning the Oakland Handicap at Golden Gate Fields on May 2, 1999.

Old Topper, Orville N Wilbur’s, The Morris Monroe and Son Of A Pistol, who is the only horse to defeat Kona Gold this year, round out the field in the six-furlong race.

Notes

There is a Pick Six carry-over for today of $123,239.05. . . . Jetin Excess will probably make her next start--and first around two turns--in the $200,000 Hollywood Starlet on Dec. 17. . . . Jockey Gary Stevens will begin a three-day suspension Wednesday for an incident in Friday’s second race. Stevens was cited for “crossing over without sufficient clearance” while riding winner Majestic Hello. The gelding, who was making the first start of his career, was not disqualified after winning by a length over Charlston Blue.
