Sean Burke stopped 39 shots in his 24th career shutout as the Phoenix Coyotes defeated the New York Rangers, 2-0, Sunday night at Madison Square Garden, ending New York’s three-game winning streak.

Phoenix ended two other Ranger streaks. They had won their last three at home and had defeated the Coyote franchise eight consecutive times, dating to Feb. 3, 1991 when the Coyotes were the Winnipeg Jets.

Burke, who lowered his goals-against average to 1.54, excelled in the second period after the Coyotes took the lead on Shane Doan’s fifth goal of the season at 2:54. He denied Michael York with a glove save six minutes into the period and stopped Jan Hlavac’s shot at the left post moments later.

Burke kept the shutout intact with two good stops in front in the last 30 seconds after the Rangers pulled goalie Mike Richter in favor of an extra skater.

Carolina 4, Ottawa 0--Shane Willis scored two goals at Raleigh, N.C., including one nine seconds into the game to set a franchise record.

Sandis Ozolinsh won the opening faceoff back to Ron Francis. He passed to Willis, who beat Jani Hurme. The previous fastest goal to open a game in Hurricane history was 10 seconds by Kevin Dineen, set Dec. 3, 1990 in a 4-2 win over Montreal.

Edmonton 5, Minnesota 4--Doug Weight had five points, including the game-winning goal 1:24 into overtime at St. Paul, Minn. He also had four assists, giving him the league lead with 19. He passed Ziggy Palffy of the Kings and Brian Leetch of the Rangers, who each have 17.

Washington 2, Atlanta 2--Ken Klee scored his first goal of the season midway through the third period, giving the Capitals the tie at Washington. He picked up a loose puck at the top of the right circle, skated behind the net and hooked a shot inside the left post.
