Heralded Brigham Young recruit Garner Meads will redshirt to take a Mormon mission and recover from a punctured lung suffered in practice.

Jesse Pinegar, another freshman, and Bart Jepsen, a sophomore who returned from a mission last summer, also will redshirt because of injuries, Coach Steve Cleveland said Friday.

Meads, a 6-foot-8 forward, has missed the past month of practice because of the lung injury. He also had knee surgery late last summer, limiting his time on the court.

“He plans to leave on his mission in February, which means he will not enroll in school for the winter semester,” Cleveland said.

Freshman Jeff McMillan will begin his career at Fordham by serving a three-game suspension for violating NCAA rules.

The 6-8 forward, a projected starter, was suspended for receiving prep school funding from his Amateur Athletic Union team. Such aid can come only from family.

Fordham’s appeal of the suspension was denied by the NCAA.

“It’s an unfortunate situation,” Coach Bob Hill said. “Jeff was unaware of the regulation when he received the financial aid.”

Wyoming Coach Steve McClain has suspended junior post player Ugo Udezue for the first three games.

Udezue was suspended because of a violation of team rules, according to a statement released by the university. McClain refused to specify the violation.
