No. 8 Illinois Gets Best of No. 6 Maryland

Illinois won the season’s first matchup of Top Ten teams with a dominating frontline performance.

Center Marcus Griffin had 19 points and eight rebounds, Brian Cook had 11 points and nine rebounds, and Sergio McClain had 10 points and 10 rebounds as the No. 8 Illini beat No. 6 Maryland, 90-80, on Tuesday in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational at Lahaina, Hawaii.

“I don’t think the team has ever rebounded better but all I know is I made a conscious effort to go to the glass,” Griffin said, referring to the Fighting Illini’s 55-37 rebounding advantage.

Illinois (3-0) advanced to today’s championship game against No. 1 Arizona. Lonny Baxter had 17 points for Maryland (1-1).

No. 1 Arizona 76, Dayton 59--The Wildcats played their second game without preseason All-American center Loren Woods but were able to dispatch the Flyers and advance to the Maui Invitational championship.

Michael Wright, who set a tournament record with 19 rebounds in the opening round, had 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Tony Stanley led Dayton (1-1) with 13 points.

The Wildcats (2-0) will be without Woods for six games. He was suspended for undisclosed NCAA rules violations.

No. 9 Tennessee 66, No. 18 Wisconsin 56--Tony Harris made six three-point baskets and scored 22 points to help the Volunteers to a victory at Knoxville, Tenn.

Tennessee (3-0) won its 31st consecutive nonconference home game.

Andy Kowske had 21 points for Wisconsin. Wisconsin’s Kirk Penney attempted and missed 16 shots from three-point range.

No. 10 Seton Hall 79, Clemson 78--Seton Hall freshman Andre Barrett made a game-winning free throw with 2.5 seconds left and fellow freshman Eddie Griffin blocked the Tigers’ last shot in a win at Clemson, S.C.

Darius Lane scored 29 points with a career-best seven three-point baskets for Seton Hall (2-0).

No. 12 Connecticut 77, Chaminade 61--Johnnie Selvie had 18 points and nine rebounds as the Huskies rebounded from their first-round loss in the Maui Invitational with a victory over host Chaminade.

The Huskies (2-1) will play Louisville game for fifth place today. The Cardinals defeated Nevada Las Vegas, 86-85, in overtime.

No. 16 Cincinnati 79, Marshall 75--Leonard Stokes forced Tamar Slay into a decisive turnover and made four free throws in the final 31 seconds to lift the Bearcats to victory at Cincinnati.

Cincinnati (2-0) blew a 15-point lead in the first half.

No. 22 Kentucky 91, Jacksonville State 48--Erik Daniels, a freshman from Cincinnati, scored 19 points as the Wildcats (1-2) cruised to their first victory of the season at Cincinnati.

In other games: Randy Holcomb and Karlo Kovacic scored 14 points apiece to lead San Diego State (2-0) to a 77-62 victory over New Mexico State (1-2) at San Diego. . . . Chad Prewitt had 15 points and nine rebounds to lift Arizona State (3-1) past Colgate, 64-50, at Tempe, Ariz. . . . Eugene Costello, playing his first game for Texas El Paso, scored 26 points as the Miners beat Washington, 73-61, Seattle. . . . Anthony Norwood had 25 points and seven assists and was four of eight from behind the three-point line as Oregon (2-0) beat Denver, 99-90, at Denver. . . . Luke Recker scored 17 of his 26 points in the second half as Iowa (2-0) defeated Drake, 73-71, at Des Moines, Iowa. . . .
