The main draw of the $10,000 USTA Laguna Niguel Futures tournament begins today at Nellie Gail Racquet Club. Michael Joyce of Los Angeles, ranked 225th, is seeded first and Cedric Kaufman of France is seeded second. Geoff Abrams, who played at Newport Harbor High and Stanford, was given a wild card into the main draw and plays sixth-seeded Justin Bower of South Africa.

Three former county high school players were in the qualifying draw, which ends today: Boston College’s Brian Kent (Dana Hills), Harvard’s David Lingman (Woodbridge) and UC Irvine’s Greg Biorkman (University). Kent was the only one of the three to reach the second round.

Brian Morton, a senior at Corona del Mar who has signed with UCI, lost in the first round to Paul Logtens of the Netherlands, 6-2, 6-2. Morton and K.C. Corkery of Manhattan Beach play today in the finals of the doubles qualifying against Dmitry Tursunov of Russia and Gordon Uehling of the U.S.

Corona del Mar sophomore Anne Yelsey upset top-seeded Brooke Borishoff of Agoura Hills, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4, to win the USTA Girls’ 18 National Open Championships at Nellie Gail. Yelsey, who was unseeded, upset seventh-seeded Aradhana Sarohia of Altadena in the quarterfinals and Tracy Lin of Anaheim in the semifinals.
