Foltz Will Head North to Play for California

Westlake High receiver and defensive back Ryan Foltz has committed to California.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder had 49 catches for 990 yards and 12 touchdowns. He is considered one of the premier cover cornerbacks in the region.

Foltz chose California over Arizona State.

“Cal gave me more of the complete package, athletically and academically,” he said. “It was all there.”

* Senior defensive back John Walker of Birmingham has been chosen defensive player of the year in the West Valley League.

Sophomore receiver Steve Smith of Taft and senior running back Matthew Clark of Cleveland were selected co-offensive players of the year.

* Quarterback Demetre Booker of Antelope Valley has been selected player of the year in the Golden League.

Quarterback Terry Furlow of Palmdale was selected back of the year, with tackle Michael Graves of Antelope Valley chosen lineman of the year.

SOCCER

* UCLA midfielder Caleb Westbay, a senior from Royal High, has been selected to the Pacific 10 Conference All-Academic team.

Westbay carries a 3.35 grade-point average and is an economics-business major. He started 18 of 19 games and was selected honorable mention All-Pac-10.

LACROSSE

* Four college women’s teams will play an exhibition today at 12:30 p.m. at Valencia High in an effort to promote women’s lacrosse in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The event was organized by junior Sapna Shaw, a Valencia student who helped form a girls’ club team at Valencia.

BASEBALL

* The San Fernando Valley Officials Assn. is looking for umpires for the high school season. Clinics are taking place this winter.
