The Fire Department will get about $300,000 worth of new computer and radio equipment as part of a five-year plan to upgrade its technology. In this latest round of spending, the department will buy 17 digital radios with supporting computers and will replace its 15-year-old communication system.

The system is used by all officers and commanders to reach each other and connect with the city’s internal network and the Internet. The computers provide basic information such as incident location, victims’ medical histories and fire hydrant sites.
