Moorpark Has Reached a Hallmark

Moorpark College is throwing a party for some old friends.

James Moore, Paul Dunham, Jamie Heggen Rennie and David Laut will be inducted into the school’s newly formed athletic hall of fame at a dinner Oct. 14 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley.

Moore was Moorpark’s athletic director from 1967-72.

Dunham coached football and men’s golf, and followed Moore as athletic director.

Heggen Rennie was an all-state softball center fielder and later a two-time All-American at Arizona.

Laut placed second in the shotput at the state championships in 1976. He later became NCAA champion at UCLA and won the bronze medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. . . .

Youth football players wearing their team jerseys will be admitted free when Moorpark hosts Santa Barbara in a Western State Conference game Saturday at 7 p.m.

Antelope Valley: Freshman forward Stephanie Nelson is the school’s season record holder for goals after scoring one in a 2-0 women’s soccer victory over Rio Hondo last week.

Nelson has 11 goals, surpassing by one the mark set last year by Autumn St. George, who has nine this season. The Marauders are in their second season of competition.

Canyons: The Cougars are ranked No. 11 in women’s soccer in Southern California by the state Commission on Athletics. . . . The women’s volleyball team is ranked No. 11 in the state by the COA.

Glendale: Another chapter in one of the longest football rivalries among Western State Conference teams takes place Saturday night when the Vaqueros face Ventura at Ventura High.

Glendale defeated Ventura, 44-0, in 1933, the first game between the schools. Ventura won the last meeting, 31-6, in 1998, but Glendale leads the series, 35-22-4.

Glendale and Compton are the oldest WSC rivalry, started in 1928 with a 53-6 victory by Compton. Glendale defeated Bakersfield, 33-0, in 1930 and lost to Santa Monica, 13-0, in 1932. . . .

The Vaqueros are ranked No. 9 in men’s soccer in Southern California by the COA.

Moorpark: The women’s volleyball team is ranked No. 5 in the state by the COA.

Oxnard: The Condors are ranked No. 13 in women’s soccer in Southern California by the COA.

Pepperdine: The men’s and women’s basketball teams are holding “Midnight Madness” practices on Oct. 13 starting at 10 p.m.

Men’s Coach Jan van Brenda Kolff has six players back from last season’s team, including two starters.

Women’s Coach Mark Trakh has nine players returning, including four starters.

Sophomore guard Damaris Hinojosa, a former Moorpark High standout and the West Coast Conference’s freshman player of the year last season, returns for the women. . . .

Bob Ctvrtlik, who played volleyball for the Waves, and seven other athletes were confirmed at the Sydney Olympics as members of the International Olympic Committee. Ctvrtlik played for the U.S. in the Olympics in 1988, ’92 and ’96. He helped Pepperdine win the NCAA title in 1985.

Ventura: Running back Maurice Atwood has undergone knee surgery for the second time since November and will miss the rest of the season. Atwood had 93 yards in Ventura’s opener after missing most of last season. . . .
