Fountain Valley Eases Its Pain With 33-0 Win

Fountain Valley proved Friday night that the best way to erase the bitter taste of consecutive defeats is to give the next opponent a sample.

The Barons took out the frustration of back-to-back losses on Trabuco Hills, thrashing the Mustangs, 33-0, at Trabuco Hills High.

After yielding 56 points over the previous two weeks, the Baron defense needed Friday’s shutout.

“I wasn’t used to giving up 67 points, or whatever it was, in two games,” Fountain Valley Coach Eric Johnson said. “The defense really responded. They didn’t do too well the last two weeks, so it was great to get the shutout.”

With the Baron offense marching up and down the field all night, there was margin for error.

The Barons (3-2) outgained Trabuco Hills, 407-113, and got 19 first downs to the Mustangs’ seven.

Fountain Valley quarterback Casey Clark threw for two touchdowns, kicked two field goals and added one point-after kick.

He hooked up with Chad Triplett on a fade from 24 yards for the game’s first touchdown on the Barons’ opening possession. He hit Triplett again two series later for a 22-yard score that put the Barons up 14-0.

Triplett finished with seven receptions for 107 yards.

The Mustangs (2-3), who ordinarily enjoy success running the ball with Daniel Tellez, were held to only 43 yards of offense in the first half. The Fountain Valley defensive line engulfed the bulky Mustang front and held Tellez to 40 yards in 12 carries.

Clark kicked field goals of 25 and 29 yards before Fountain Valley got a three-yard touchdown run from Michael Kotler and a 16-yard scoring run from Channing Jung.

Jung (111 yards, 14 carries) led a Baron rushing attack that piled up 272 yards.
