Anteaters Earn Sweep in Bay Area

John Dorfi and Dan Klatt scored fourth-quarter goals as UC Irvine defeated No. 4 Stanford, 5-3, in a nonconference water polo game Sunday at Stanford.

Goalkeeper Dan Hipp recorded a season-high 15 saves for Irvine (8-3), ranked fifth in the nation.

The victory gave the Anteaters a sweep of the Bay Area teams after they beat second-ranked California, 5-4, on Saturday. That win was Irvine Coach Ted Newland’s 650th career victory; his 35-year record at Irvine is 651-284-5.

Stanford is 6-5.

In Big West Conference women’s soccer:

CS Fullerton 2, Boise State 0--Monica Reade and April Eggler scored for Fullerton, which ended a four-game losing streak. Reade scored on a header in the sixth minute off an assist from Leah Sims. Eggler scored her first goal of the season in the 76th minute. Freshman goalkeeper Laura Janke recorded her first shutout for the Titans (6-8, 2-2).

UC Irvine 2, Idaho 0--Sara Henderson, from Santa Margarita High, scored from 10 yards in the 24th minute and Ariana Downs added a goal off an assist from Janelle Doyle (Newport Harbor) in the 47th minute. It was the third consecutive shutout for the Anteaters (8-3-2, 3-1), and the seventh this season for goalkeeper Allison Merrick, who recorded four saves.

Idaho is 7-6, 1-2.
