Harvard-Westlake Sweeps 75th Consecutive Volleyball Victory

Harvard-Westlake High won its 75th consecutive Mission League girls’ volleyball match dating to 1992 and assumed sole possession of first place with a 15-13, 15-5, 15-11 victory over Flintridge Sacred Heart on Tuesday night at Sacred Heart.

Courtney Schultz had 15 kills, 12 blocks and eight digs, and Karalyn Kuchenbecker added 15 kills and eight digs for the Wolverines (14-0, 3-0 in league play).

Sarah Skeehan had nine kills, nine digs and 15 blocks, and Jacklyn Cuevas and Jillian Davis each added nine kills for the Tologs (5-3, 2-1).

In other girls’ volleyball matches:

Taft def. Cleveland, 15-2, 15-8, 8-15, 15-4--Shelly Rom had a .647 hitting percentage with 12 kills and one error in 17 attempts for the Toreadors (5-1, 3-1) in a West Valley League victory at Taft.

Poly def. Verdugo Hills, 15-7, 7-15, 15-13, 15-3--Sonia Torres had 10 kills, and Jennifer Alfaro had eight kills and 11 digs for the Parrots (6-1, 4-0) in a Sunset Six League match at Poly.

La Canada def. Monrovia, 15-4, 15-3, 15-0--Megan Blatchley had five kills in five attempts for the three-time defending Rio Hondo League champion Spartans (11-2, 3-0), who notched their 33rd consecutive league victory, at Monrovia.

Hart def. Saugus, 15-4, 14-16, 15-3, 15-11--Nicole Stuka had 12 kills and eight digs for Hart in a Foothill League victory at Saugus.

Casey Boller had eight kills and 10 digs for the Indians (5-3, 3-0).

Royal def. Simi Valley, 15-9, 15-7, 15-7--Katie Clark had eight kills with five blocks for the Highlanders (8-6, 5-1) in a Marmonte League victory at Royal.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Verdugo Hills 7, Sherman Oaks CES 0--Doubles teams for host Verdugo Hills (7-0, 4-0) remained unbeaten in a Sunset Six League victory.

Helen Luu and Amy Pham at No. 1 doubles; cousins Polly Mac and Leesa Mac at No. 2 and Susan Mac and Linda Pham at No. 3 are all 7-0 on the season.

Sherman Oaks CES is 6-1, 3-1.

San Fernando 4, Van Nuys 3--Singles player Cristina Sandoval and the doubles team of Ana Alvarado and Annette Mendoza remained undefeated for San Fernando (7-0, 4-0) in a Valley Mission League match at El Cariso Park.

Burbank 14, Canyon 4-- Burbank (9-2, 5-0) won eight of nine singles sets and assumed sole possession of first place in the Foothill League at Canyon. The Cowboys (10-2, 4-1) dropped into second.

Olga Yepremian, playing at No. 1 singles, lost only three games in three sets, and Veronica Irinco, playing at No. 2 singles, dropped only four games in three matches for the Bulldogs.

Simi Valley 13, Thousand Oaks 5--Stacy Gunawan and Melissa Hoang swept in singles for Simi Valley (11-3, 6-1) in a Marmonte League match at Thousand Oaks.

Gunawan did not lose a game.

Agoura 9, Newbury Park 9--Yassie Entekhabi, playing at No. 1 singles, clinched a 79-70 victory on games for the Chargers by defeating Jessica Thompson, 6-1, in a Marmonte League match at Agoura.

Entekhabi is 20-1 in league play, her only loss coming by default when she withdrew because of illness.

Westlake 15, Moorpark 3--Jessica Blau, playing No. 1 singles, swept her sets and Warriors (9-3, 7-0) won a Marmonte League match at Westlake.

Freshman Poppy Garofalo, who usually teams with her twin Daisy in doubles, swept in singles.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Foothill League Match No. 1--Junior Sara Jones of Hart shot a two-over-par 33 to earn medalist honors and lead the Indians to a victory at El Cariso Golf Course.

Erica Leary shot a 38 and Natasha Peris had a 43 to give the Indians 114.

Burbank, led by Moah Chang’s 34, was second with 136.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Nordhoff 15, Cate 10--Spencer Ford scored nine goals and the Rangers posted their sixth consecutive victory in a nonleague match at Nordhoff.

Ford had three goals in the second quarter when Nordhoff (8-6) extended a 3-2 lead to 7-3.
