Los Angeles County

CASTAIC LAKE--Last week’s trout plant woke up the striped bass and several were caught on trout-like lures. The bite has subsided some since midweek, however. Largemouth bass are biting on live shad and a variety of lures and baits.

PYRAMID LAKE--Catfish are biting in the marina area and largemouth bass are striking crankbaits early and late. They’re moving deeper during the day.

Ventura County

LAKE CASITAS--Trout, bass and catfish, in that order, are providing the most action. The bigger bass are being caught with trout-like lures.

LAKE PIRU--Bass fishing is fair at best, but the fish are mostly small and biting mostly on crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Small red-ear perch and Crappie are showing as well. Some trout.

Santa Barbara County

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout action is fair for trollers using lead-core line at the west end. Red-ear perch are holding behind Arrowhead Island, biting at 30 feet on night crawlers. Bass fishing is slow, but those using crawdads at Jackrabbit Flats are doing OK.

Orange County

ANAHEIM LAKE--Closing date is Oct. 22. Meanwhile, catfish action is fair.

IRVINE LAKE--Catfish remain the best bet but those who have had their fill of catfish are eager for the Nov. 10 trout season opener. Meanwhile, there’s plenty of crappie to go along with catfish.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish are biting on mackerel and mealworms, and there is no limit. Bass fishing is fair to good with fish to about five pounds.

OSO LAKE--Bass are biting most lures, and the top catch weighed 10 pounds. Double-digit scores are common.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Opening date is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 2.

San Bernardino County

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--Limits of trout are common. It snowed Wednesday morning.

JESS RANCH LAKES--Trout fishing is steady and a few weighed in at close to five pounds. Catfish action is fair.

Riverside County

LAKE PERRIS--Bass action is slow to fair, but the bigger fish are not yet cooperating.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass action has been picking up, although the bigger fish remain hook-shy. Catfish action at the dam and east end is just as good, and largemouth bass and bluegill are being caught sporadically.

San Diego County

LAKE CUYAMACA--The trout bite has improved from fair to very good, with quick limits the rule. Catfish are holding near the tower.

LAKE POWAY--Fishing is spotty for all species. The trout opener is Nov. 1.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Barrett and San Vicente offer the best bass fishing. An eight-pound three ounce bass was caught on a shiner at San Vicente. Barrett is open Sundays only, and with reservations through Ticketmaster. El Capitan is open on weekends only. Lake Murray and Lake Miramar will open for trout season Nov. 4.

Eastern Sierra

Snow fell in the upper reaches at midweek, but good weather is expected this weekend. In the Bishop area, an eight-pound rainbow was caught at South Lake on a night crawler-flasher combo. Big trout are biting in all the lakes above town, and fishing in Bishop Creek is rated excellent on night crawlers and salmon eggs. In the Mammoth Lakes area, Crowley Lake fly fishermen are enjoying wide-open action using a variety of flies. Ruth Berkley, Yorba Linda, caught a 21-inch brown with a chironomid on a trip guided by Sierra Drifters. Also a top spot for fly fishermen is the San Joaquin River, its banks ablaze with fall colors. Heaviest catch in the region was nine pounds one ounce by Bill Ruiz, of Fontana, on a Panther Martin cast from the Convict Lake jetty. On the June Lake Loop, it’s hard to go wrong at any of the lakes. Fish topping five pounds were pulled from June, Gull and Grant. In the Bridgeport area, Twin Lakes are a good choice for those targeting big browns, as this is the time to get them and a few already have been caught. The East Walker and West Walker rivers are producing good results for fly fishermen using midge, mayfly and caddis patterns.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--13 anglers (1 boat): 15 albacore.

OXNARD (Cisco’s)--57 anglers (4 boats): 1 black seabass (released), 66 yellowtail, 81 white seabass, 40 whitefish, 10 sheephead, 36 sand bass, 85 rockfish, 1 cowcod, 7 barracuda.

MARINA DEL REY--48 anglers (4 boats): 145 sculpin, 21 sand bass, 5 cabezon, 3 sole, 2 halibut, 2 black seabass (released).

REDONDO BEACH--28 anglers (3 boats): 1 white seabass, 1 cabezon, 1 bonito, 19 calico bass, 21 sand bass, 40 triggerfish, 278 sculpin, 19 whitefish, 1 black seabass (released).

SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--40 anglers (3 boats): 15 yellowfin tuna, 2 skipjack, 13 calico bass, 12 sheephead, 86 whitefish, 56 rockfish, 9 sculpin. (22nd St. Landing)--43 anglers (1 boat): 200 bonito, 20 calico bass, 14 sheephead, 38 whitefish.

LONG BEACH (Sportfishing/Berth 55)--18 anglers (1 boat): 3 barracuda, 88 calico bass, 13 rockfish, 25 whitefish, 46 sheephead, 5 bonito. (Marina Sportfishing)--20 anglers (2 boats): 20 sand bass, 190 rockfish, 3 whitefish, 1 sculpin, 18 red snapper, 12 sole.
