Torres and Katella Rush Past Century

Ruben Torres rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns in 21 carries to lead Katella past visiting Century, 42-34, Friday at Western High in an Empire League game.

It was the second consecutive victory for Katella (2-4, 1-0 in league).The Knights took a 28-7 lead in the second quarter, but Century cut the lead to 28-20 with 9 minutes 44 seconds left in the third quarter on a 55-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Fred Medina.

But Century could get no closer.

“We knew that Century could score, but when Ruben gets the ball 20-25 times a game, we can keep up with any team,” Katella Coach Dominik Unger said.

Century (1-5, 0-1), which has lost five straight, opened the scoring on a 13-play, six-minute scoring drive that covered 76 yards. Joseph Rivera ended the drive with a 16-yard scoring pass to Celestino Johnson.

But on the ensuing drive, Torres carried seven times for 61 yards and tied the score, 7-7, on a 21-yard touchdown run.

Torres, a 5-foot-8, 180-pound senior who had 116 yards by halftime, scored again on a 10-yard run with 6:53 left in the second quarter.

Katella quarterback Chris Haller passed for 114 yards and two touchdowns, but completed only five of 14 and had two passes intercepted.

Victor Leite rushed for 81 yards in 15 carries for Century.
