UCI Works Overtime for Soccer Victory

Brad Aspey scored on a direct kick nine minutes into overtime as UC Irvine defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 2-1, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s soccer game Sunday at San Luis Obispo.

After a scoreless first half, the Mustangs (4-8-1, 2-2) took the lead on Johnny Cummins’ seventh goal of the season in the 49th minute, but UC Irvine (8-5-1, 1-0-1) responded two minutes later when Lawrence Smalls scored off a pass from Jon Spencer.

In another conference game:

CS Fullerton 1, UC Santa Barbara 0 (OT)--Senior midfielder Art Ramirez headed a pass from Walter Camargo past Gaucho reserve goalkeeper Jeremy Pruzin 11 minutes into overtime. The Titans (9-4-1, 3-0-1) outshot Santa Barbara, 14-5. The Gauchos fell to 6-8, 1-2.

In Big West Conference women’s soccer:

UC Irvine 2, Utah State 1--One minute after Utah State tied the game, freshman Ariana Downs scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute for Irvine (9-3-2, 4-1). Downs scored on a header off a pass from Melody Mangrello.

Freshman Lachelle Manzano gave the Anteaters a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. Senior goalkeeper Allison Merrick had five saves for Irvine, which won its fourth consecutive game. Utah State fell to 3-9, 1-2.

In a nonconference game:

Chapman 5, Rhodes (Tenn.) 0--Chapman scored three goals in the first half to win its fifth consecutive game. It was the team’s 11th shutout this season, one short of the school record set in 1999. Sara Struhs scored her seventh goal for the host Panthers (12-4-1) and had an assist.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

William & Mary 3, UC Irvine 0--Irvine’s Larissa Carter had 22 kills and 21 digs in the 15-13, 15-13, 15-12 loss. Tara Tobias had 18 kills for visiting William & Mary (10-8).

UCI dropped to 6-10.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo:

UC Irvine 10, Pacific 7--Freshman Garrett Gentry scored three goals and Dan Klatt and Jeff Powers scored two apiece for Irvine (9-3, 3-1). The Anteaters, ranked third in the nation, led, 5-4, in the third quarter before Gentry scored all of his goals to give them an 8-4 edge going into the fourth. Dan Hipp had seven saves for Irvine. Ryan Brown had five for Pacific (5-10, 1-6).
