Brush Fire Consumes 60 Acres Near Homes
Fueled by winds, a brush fire that broke out Sunday afternoon in Lake View Terrace threatened about 20 homes in the area before it was extinguished.
The fire, which was reported at about 2:15 p.m., burned 60 acres in the 11500 block of Jeff Avenue, an area of rolling hills and grasslands, and came within 100 feet of the homes, said Jim Wells, spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. Winds of 25 to 35 mph fanned the flames and made the fire more difficult to fight, Wells added.
The blaze, which was put out at 3:45 p.m. by more than 200 Los Angeles city and county firefighters, caused no injuries and no structural damage, Wells said.
While the fire raged, two SuperScoopers, three sky cranes and at least seven helicopters dropped water on the flames. Ground crews attacked the fire with hose lines, while more firefighters were stationed near homes to protect them, Wells said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
