Hudson Gossard of Crescenta Valley (7-0, 2-0) needs 299 yards passing to surpass the school mark of 1,925 set last season by Scott Vossmeyer.

Gossard’s 21 touchdown passes might be a record but Crescenta Valley officials aren’t sure because records are incomplete at the traditionally run-oriented school.

“There were years when we barely threw 21 times,” said Coach Alan Eberhart, whose team plays Muir (4-3, 2-0) Friday for first place in the Pacific League. “When you don’t throw it much, there’s no reason to keep things like that.”

Sophomore running back Sean Wallace of Antelope Valley, 5-10 and 250 pounds, reminds Coach Brent Newcomb of a young Earl Campbell.

Newcomb calls Wallace “Little Earl,” and issued him jersey No. 34, Campbell’s number.

Wallace has rushed for 456 yards and six touchdowns.

Newcomb hopes Wallace can trim down to 223, Campbell’s playing weight in high school.

“That’s if we can keep his mom from making that good home cooking,” Newcomb said.”
