Upland Rolls Over Chino, 33-7

The cat-and-mouse game started with the opening kickoff. Kick the ball out of bounds, away from Upland’s dangerous tandem of Julian Williams and Caz Hill.

Problem was, Chino had to kick the ball in-bounds eventually, which meant that Williams would touch the ball eventually--and the Cowboys would regret it.

In this case, eventually happened sooner rather than later. Williams did everything but find the end zone Friday night, racking up 191 yards in returns and setting up three first-quarter scores that sent Upland to a surprisingly easy 33-7 thrashing of Chino in their Baseline League showdown Friday night at Upland.

Upland’s seventh consecutive victory puts the Highlanders, 7-1 overall and 3-0 in league play, on the high road to the league title. The loss was the first of the season for Chino (7-1, 2-1).

How all of this transpired isn’t hard to decipher. Chino Coach John Monger pulled out every trick in his considerable book: double reverses, fake punts and even an onside kickoff off a free punt, which came after the Cowboys were dinged for a safety after a bad snap on a punt.

And all the Highlanders did was take those tricks as they came and turn its considerable defense loose on what was left. Upland held Chino’s Gabe Rivera, he of the 1,072 yards, to 28 yards in 15 carries.
