A 23-year-old man was shot to death in his car Saturday morning in a crime-ridden area of the city that has witnessed at least four other fatal shootings since June, police said.

The shooting occurred about 11:25 a.m. in the 9200 block of Wakefield Avenue, said Sgt. John Armour of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Devonshire Division. Two men shot the victim in the upper body and fled, police said.

The attack did not appear to be gang-related, Armour said. It happened in the “Witch’s Hat” section of Panorama City, an area with a long history of drug- and gang-related crimes.

In July, a gunman opened fire into a carload of teenagers parked outside the Sepulveda Recreation Center, killing an 18-year-old man. Three other young men died in gang-related violence in the same neighborhood in June.

In response, police have increased patrols in the area.
