Waldorf and Lehman Playing for Juniors

Share

Duffy and Vicky Waldorf looked around and realized junior golfers in the Santa Clarita Valley could use some help.

So they decided to do something about it.

Waldorf and fellow PGA Tour pro Tom Lehman will play a nine-hole exhibition at Robinson Ranch in Canyon Country to cap a day of activities Sept. 30.

Proceeds will benefit Bethlehem Lutheran Church and junior golf in the area.

The event was Vicky’s idea, Waldorf said.

“Vista Valencia was the only public course in the area for juniors to play until Robinson Ranch opened,” Waldorf said. “As great as Robinson Ranch is, kids can’t hang around the course every day and work on their game because they can’t afford it. We can’t necessarily do anything about that, but there are some ways we can help.

“I’m not even sure there are any junior golf associations in the area. We haven’t decided exactly what we’re going to do, but we have some ideas. We might create some scholarships or run some tournaments, like a Santa Clarita Junior Open. Maybe we’ll do both.”

The Lehman-Waldorf festivities will start at 8:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Canyon Country, just down Sand Canyon Road from Robinson Ranch.

After Lehman and Waldorf will speak at a one-hour religious service which begins at 9:45 a.m., everyone will head for the course.

Eddie Merrins, who was Waldorf’s coach at UCLA, will conduct a clinic at noon.

After a barbecue lunch, play will begin at about 1 p.m. on the front nine of the Mountain Course.

Sponsorships are available for every hole and each sponsor is allowed two players for that hole.

Tickets are $45. Information: (661) 252-0622.
