Making the Frida Kahlo Film a Work of Art

Share

Re “Perhaps, Finally, a Frida Kahlo Film” (by Lorenza Mun~oz, Aug. 30): I too have been wanting to see a film on the big screen about this superlative artist for a very long time. It has indeed been long-coming. The late Raul Julia (with a few extra pounds under his belt) would have been perfect as Diego Rivera; it is a tragedy that he did not live long enough to realize that endeavor.

I would beseech director Betty Kaplan to consider an actor who I’m sure has never been brought up as a possible contender for the part: Helena Bonham Carter. If you think that my suggestion is among the furthest possibility imaginable, watch the 1985 movie “Lady Jane” (Paramount, directed by Trevor Nunn). Then maybe you will agree with me that Bonham Carter is the “spitting image” of Frida Kahlo (complete with Kahlo’s characteristic eyebrows). I have a strong feeling that if she were to play Frida, she could very well finally end up winning a well-deserved Academy Award.

I am a little bit concerned that with all the rush and plans for a movie on the life of a great artist like Frida Kahlo, there will be some misrepresentation of her life. As an average moviegoer, I want to feel proud about my culture and how it is represented on the big screen. So, to all those actors, producers and directors, etc., just take time to analyze and write a movie that will not offend anybody.
