New Pastor to Give 1st Sermon

* Ventura Seventh-day Adventist Church today will welcome its new senior pastor, William Colburn, who comes to Ventura from the Diamond Head Church in Honolulu. Colburn’s first sermon will be during the 10:50 a.m. worship service.

‘Bread of Life’ Dinner in Oxnard

* All Saints Episcopal Church in Oxnard will hold a “Bread of Life” dinner today beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the parish hall.

On Sunday, a Eucharist worship service, Rite I, will be held at 8 a.m. and a Rite II service will be held at 11 a.m. A Spanish-language worship service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Also, Sunday school classes for children ages 5 to 12 begin at 10:30 a.m.; youth Bible study for junior high and high school students begins at 11 a.m.

‘Good News for Repeat Offenders’

* Pastor David Smith at Ojai Valley Adventist Church will deliver the sermon message “Good News for Repeat Offenders” today at 10:45 a.m. The message draws from C.S. Lewis’ “Mere Christianity” and is the final installment to Smith’s sermon series “The Patient Shows No Improvement.” A complimentary luncheon for members and visitors will follow the worship hour.

Ojai Valley Adventist offers a service that blends contemporary Christian music with classic songs of faith. Bible study hour begins at 9:30 a.m.

Reverend to Preach on Blessings

* The Rev. Bradley Resare will preach on “Blessed to Be a Blessing,” using James 1:17-27, Sunday at United Methodist Church in Simi Valley. Worship services will be held at 8 and 10 a.m. Child care is provided for infants and preschoolers. Communion will be held at the first service.

* Senior Pastor Adiel De Pano will lead a worship service titled “Peekaboo Babies” at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Oxnard at 10:15 a.m. Sunday. Child care is available for children 4 and younger.

Interfaith Fellowship to Gather

Sermon on ‘Seeking Happiness’

‘GriefShare’ Seminar to Begin

* Ventura Missionary Church on Wednesday will host the first installment of a weekly recovery seminar and support group titled “GriefShare.”

Jewish Academy Plans Open House

* Conejo Jewish Academy in Agoura Hills will hold a registration open house Sept. 10 for its fall session from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The four-week program is open to children ages 7 to 13. Classes meet on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

Temple to Host Discussion Groups

* Temple Etz Chaim in Thousand Oaks will sponsor a yeshiva for the beginning of the High Holidays--Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur--with a Havdallah service at 8 p.m. Sept. 23 led by Rabbi Richard Spiegel, the temple spiritual leader, and Hazzan Jeff Cohen.

At 9:15 p.m., there will be several discussion groups, including “Singing the High Holy Day Melodies” with Cohen, who is a cantor.
