An elderly woman was killed and her husband injured Friday night in Garden Grove after they tried to cross a street where it was prohibited, police said.

Phyllis Shanahan, 78, of Garden Grove died at UCI Medical Center in Orange shortly after she and her husband were struck by a car about 9:30 p.m. at Harbor Boulevard and Twintree Avenue, police said. The driver, who was traveling north on Harbor, told police he could not see the couple in the darkness. He flagged down a paramedic after the accident.

The husband, whose first name was not released by police, was taken to the same hospital and reported in good condition.
