Cal Lutheran Shrinks Against Pacific Lutheran

Share

Cal Lutheran unveiled its “Purple Stretch” offense on Saturday, with sets featuring four or five receivers and no huddle.

At least the Kingsmen have another eight games to master it.

Cal Lutheran got into the end zone only once and defending NCAA Division III champion Pacific Lutheran University beat the Kingsmen, 49-7, in an opener at Puyallup, Wash.

“Good for a whole seven points,” said Coach Scott Squires of Cal Lutheran.

The Kingsmen opened up with Pacific Lutheran for the fourth consecutive year in a game billed as the Lutheran Brotherhood Kickoff Classic.

Chris Czernek completed all five of his passes on the opening drive, moving the Kingsmen to the Pacific Lutheran 15 in 12 plays.

But on the 13th play, Czernek was sacked by linebacker Jasen Bennie and fumbled. Lineman Kris Helphinestine picked up the ball and ran 79 yards for a touchdown.

Cal Lutheran fumbled four times and had 363 yards total offense, with most coming after the outcome had been decided.

“We beat ourselves quite a bit,” said Squires, a guard and linebacker for Pacific Lutheran in the mid-1980s. “Too many turnovers, some bad center exchanges and some miscues on defense. You’re not going to win playing like that against a team like PLU.”

Czernek completed 32 of 41 passes for 303 yards and scored on a one-yard run in the third quarter.

The Lutes finished with 560 yards of total offense. Redshirt freshman Aaron Binger rushed for 171 yards and two scores in eight carries. Chad Johnson completed 20 of 30 passes for 291 yards and no interceptions.
