Davila, Matadors Pull Off Slick Victory

Terry Davila, coach of the Cal State Northridge men’s soccer team, paced the sideline with his shirt neatly tucked, pants without a wrinkle, his hair slicked back and arms resting comfortably on his hips.

Davila hasn’t changed a bit, but the results have.

In just his second year coaching a young and inexperienced team, the Matadors accomplished something they hadn’t done since 1994--they defeated California.

The Matadors pulled off the feat Friday night, 1-0, in a nonconference game at Northridge.

“To beat a [Pacific 10] school is a big win for us,” Davila said. “It’s an honor for us just to play a Pac-10 school.”

It was only the second victory for the Matadors (3-2) against Cal (1-3).

Freshman midfielder Tony Ortega scored in the fourth minute on a header past diving goalkeeper Marco Palmieri.

Northridge’s Christian Perez made seven saves.
