St. Anthony, Brethren Are All Even, 27-27

Last week, Brethren Christian and Long Beach St. Anthony combined for just 13 points in opening season losses to Cerritos and San Diego Marian Catholic, respectively.

So it was no surprise that both teams were trying hard to put more points on the board when they met Friday night. They did--and each is still looking for its first victory after a 27-27 tie in a nonleague game in front of 800 at Clark Field in Long Beach.

Brethren Christian (0-1-1) tied the game on a two-yard run by senior Leon Green and the extra point Dave Workman.

Brethren Christian then held off a late charge by St. Anthony. Brethren Christian was led by senior quarterback Kyle Painter, who completed 18 of 29 passes for 211 yards with two touchdowns. He also ran for a score.

“We were looking for a big game from Kyle tonight and we got it,” Coach Bruce Eien said.

Painter’s main target was Workman, a senior who caught seven passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

The teams traded the lead throughout. At halftime, Brethren Christian trailed with 21-20.

Sophomore tailback Francisco Torres scored the second of his two touchdowns for St. Anthony on a two-yard run in the third quarter. After a two-point conversion run failed, St. Anthony led, 27-20. Torres led St. Anthony with 86 yards in 11 carries.
