Titans Win Men’s Soccer Tournament

Tournament MVP David Dischner scored in the 33rd minute and Hector Orellana scored with 14 seconds remaining as Cal State Fullerton defeated host Loyola Marymount, 3-1, to win the Loyola Marymount men’s soccer tournament Sunday.

The Lions took the lead seven minutes into the game with a goal from Arturo Torres, who dribbled around three defenders and got a shot past Titan goalkeeper Sean Rockwell.

The Titans (6-0) answered with a goal from Ricky Melendez, who took a pass from teammate Art Ramirez to tie the score, 1-1, in the 15th minute. Melendez, Ramirez, Orellana and Duncan Oughton were named to the all-tournament team for the Titans.

The Lions (4-2) finished third in the tournament.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

UC Irvine 0, St. Mary’s 0 (double overtime)--Senior goalkeeper Allison Merrick made five saves, including a diving save on a shot by Katie Sticinski in the first overtime, to earn her third shutout for the Anteaters (4-1-1). Ruth Montgomery made five saves for St. Mary’s (3-3-1), which outshot the Anteaters, 16-14.

In the Southern California men’s water polo tournament:

UC Irvine 11, UC San Diego 7--Jeff Powers scored four goals and Tony Grosso scored three to lead the Anteaters (5-1) in the fifth-place game. Dan Hipp had eight saves for UC Irvine. Jon Samuels had four goals and Glen Busch made two saves for UC San Diego.

Dan Klatt scored four goals and Grosso scored three in Irvine’s 14-6 victory over Long Beach State in the fifth-place semifinal.

USC 9, Stanford 5--Pedrag Damjanov scored three goals, including two in the Trojans’ six-goal third quarter, and goalie Bozidar Damjanovic made 14 saves in the final for USC, which improved to 6-0. Stanford is 5-1.
