Share

Sonora running back David Mayfield caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Nick Ross with four seconds left to give the Raiders a 24-22 victory over Anaheim in a nonleague football game Friday night at Glover Stadium.

Leading 22-16 with 28 seconds left, Anaheim lined up to punt from its own 23, then took a safety when Mauricio Garcia ran back into the end zone. That made the score 22-18.

Football--A story Saturday on the Anaheim-Sonora high school football game misidentified the player who caught the game-winning touchdown pass for Sonora. Terrence Hobley caught the pass with four seconds remaining to give the Raiders a 24-22 victory.

The Colonists then gave up the ball on a free kick--one that cost them. Sonora’s Tim Gonzalez caught it at the Raider 25 and raced to the Anaheim 30, where he was stopped with 11 seconds left.

Ross then found Mayfield, who somehow got behind the defense.

Anaheim (0-3) had a 22-7 lead at the half on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Paterson to Jonny Becerra and touchdown runs of eight yards by Magdaleno Alonzo and 35 yards by John Davis Jr.

Sonora (3-0) scored with 23 seconds left in the half on a 16-yard touchdown from Ross to Gonzalez. The point-after kick made the score 19-7.

After the kickoff return pushed the ball into Sonora territory, Mauricio Garcia hit a 45-yard field goal with no time left in the half to put Anaheim up, 22-7.

Sonora got another safety in the third quarter and a 16-yard scoring run from Mayfield in the fourth quarter to pull to within 22-16.
