Servite Gets Defensive in Victory Over Tustin

Servite’s defense stopped Tustin on all three of its second-half drives and held on for a 14-6 victory in a battle of undefeated teams Saturday at Cal State Fullerton.

Tenth-ranked Servite (3-0) preserved the win when Tustin quarterback David Miller was stopped at midfield on a fourth-and-30 play with 1 minute 12 seconds remaining in the game.

Servite scored first when Justin Domineck caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Adam Ernst with 5:05 left in the first quarter.

Eighth-ranked Tustin (2-1) then went 78 yards in 13 plays, using almost 6 1/2 minutes on the drive. Chris Chester ran it in from 18 yards to make it 7-6.

Servite had a chance to add to its lead late in the first half, but Bryan Rizzuto’s 34-yard field goal was blocked by Matt McCoy. The block came after Ernst was sacked for an 11-yard loss. McCoy had earlier blocked Corey Delgado’s punt.

A minute into the second half, Matt Jalandoni recovered a Ricky Miller fumble to give Servite the ball at Tustin’s 27-yard line. Four plays later, Domineck scored on a six-yard run to make the score 14-6.

Tustin then chewed up more than 10 minutes, driving 64 yards in 17 plays, but on the second play of the fourth quarter, Ricky Miller was stopped at the one-yard line.

After forcing Servite to punt, Tustin drove to the Friars’ 27-yard line, thanks to a pass interference call with 2:16 left to play. A clipping penalty pushed Tustin back and the Tillers failed to gain another yard in the game.

Lamar Mason led Servite with 94 yards rushing in 17 carries. Chester led Tustin with 69 yards in 13 carries.
