Grandmother to Face Trial in Shooting
A Simi Valley grandmother with no criminal record was ordered Monday to stand trial on an attempted murder charge for allegedly shooting her son-in-law during a heated argument two months ago.
Deloris Chartier, 64, was held to answer the charge, which carries a possible life prison sentence, after a preliminary hearing in Ventura County Superior Court.
According to police, Chartier arrived at her daughter’s home on the morning of July 7 to baby-sit her two grandchildren and got into an argument with son-in-law Glenn Barry, 36.
As the dispute intensified, police said, Chartier pulled out a handgun and fired at Barry, hitting him twice in the chest and seriously wounding him.
Chartier left the scene in her pickup truck but was spotted by police a few blocks away and arrested, police said.
During the arrest, Chartier suffered a heart attack and was taken to a local hospital.
Chartier remains jailed on $750,000 bail. Her arraignment is set for Oct. 10.
