Train Tunnel to Be Closed for 2 Weeks
A train tunnel through the Santa Susana Pass will close for two weeks for repairs, beginning Saturday, forcing hundreds of Amtrak and Metrolink passengers from Ventura County to take buses to Chatsworth to catch the train south.
The $4-million project will include ripping out tracks, replacing the mud at the tunnel’s bottom with concrete and replacing the disintegrating wooden ties with more durable concrete ones, said Mike McGinley, director of engineering for Metrolink.
The 1.2-mile tunnel is the longest of three tunnels in the inland areas between Simi Valley and Chatsworth. About 300 people a day commute on Metrolink from Simi Valley to the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles along the Coast Main rail line and through the Santa Susanna Pass. Another 220 passengers typically board the train in Moorpark, 80 board in Oxnard and 70 in Camarillo. Six Amtrak trains and 10 freight trains use the tunnel each weekday.
