Compassion for Cowboys

Win or lose this week against the Carolina Panthers, the Dallas Cowboys at least have been assured they won’t be dissed.

Last week, San Francisco 49er receiver Terrell Owens, after scoring touchdowns, twice ran to the center of the field in Texas Stadium to taunt the Cowboys.

“There’s no place in football for that,” Carolina quarterback Steve Beuerlein said.

“There’s nothing wrong with being excited about making a play and doing a little dance or something,” Dallas linebacker Dexter Coaxley said. “But when you run 50 yards and single yourself out, away from all your teammates, it’s kind of like rubbing it in your face.

“We were being insulted and embarrassed.”

The Washington Redskins were just plain embarrassed when they lost two of their first three games after owner Daniel Snyder spent $100 million to improve their roster.

There were calls for the head of Coach Norv Turner.

There were calls for the benching of starting quarterback Brad Johnson and the promotion of backup quarterback Jeff George.

“It’s a little easier to practice this week,” said Redskin receiver Irving Fryar.

That’s this week. But be assured, if Washington loses, the silence will cease.

The New York Giants lost for the first time last week, but they still lead the NFL in rushing, averaging 163.8 yards per game.
