Mosley Ready When Oscar Is

Shane to Oscar: Call any time.

World Boxing Council welterweight champion Shane Mosley, resigned to the fact that his much-anticipated rematch against Oscar De La Hoya has become a victim of a legal battle, has moved on, signing to fight Antonio Diaz of Coachella on Nov. 4 at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

But Mosley, who beat De La Hoya on a split decision in June, isn’t giving up his hope of meeting De La Hoya again.

And for good reason. Mosley can make more than twice as much fighting De La Hoya as he can against anyone else at this point.

“Whenever Oscar is ready,” Mosley said, “then I’m ready.”

Originally, the two were to fight in September. That was moved to November. Then, because De La Hoya was busy launching a singing career, the fight date was pushed to January.

Now, De La Hoya finds himself in legal limbo as he attempts to switch promoters, from Bob Arum to Jerry Perenchio, making next May the most likely possibility for a rematch.

“It’s something that can’t be controlled,” Mosley said. “He has things going on in his life. I understand, but I’ll be around a long time, so if he wants to fight in May, let’s fight in May. If he wants to fight in November, let’s fight in November.”

Cedric Kushner, Mosley’s promoter, said that if Perenchio, the CEO of Univision, the Spanish-language television network, wins the right to promote De La Hoya, it might be good for Mosley.

“Potentially, there may be more money,” Kushner said, “with the new gentleman coming on board with Univision and the exposure that makes available. If that’s the case, I would welcome that.”
