Fullerton’s Kim Wins at Challenger Event

Kevin Kim of Fullerton defeated Los Angeles’ Michael Joyce, 7-6, 6-2, in the first round of the $25,000 USTA Men’s Challenger of Calabasas Monday at the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center.
Last year, the fourth-seeded Kim, ranked No. 131 in the world, reached finals at Challenger events in Aptos and Tallahassee, Fla.
In this morning’s first-round matches, Newport Beach’s Taylor Dent plays Eric Taino, formerly of UCLA.
HONORS
Former Santa Ana College athletes Daniel Trujillo and Ana Duarte were honored as scholar-athletes by the state Commission on Athletics.
Trujillo, now playing baseball at Point Loma Nazarene, had a 3.92 grade-point average at Santa Ana, and Duarte, a swimmer at Cal State Los Angeles, had a 3.77 GPA.
SOCCER
Defender Megan Young, formerly of Sunny Hills High and Cypress College, has committed to play women’s soccer at Chapman.
FOOTBALL
Esperanza running back Temitope Sonuyi, The Times’ Orange County player of the year, will visit the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Wednesday. Sonuyi, who will also visit Harvard during the trip, is also considering California. He expects to announce his college decision in about a month.
